Mario Gooden and Jonathan González in ConversationSaturday, October 26, 2024, 5:15pm–6:30pm (RSVP)

Left side: A visual score illustrating a choreographic practice appears as a series of horizontal lines in pixelated tones of black and gray across the page with the letter “S” and an illegible word foregrounding in a stark black tone; a time signature indicates a start and end duration. Right side: A visual score illustrating a choreographic practice creates a relationship between two images: an anachronistic group portrait of a solitary black man in a crowd of white people and a group of children in Halloween costumes; the majority of the page is a white background; black integer lines indicate some relation between the worlds of these images through undisclosed calculations.
Jonathan González and Judd Smith, score for Spectral Dances: Density of the Air and Chorus, 2024

Spectral Dances is an improvisational work by choreographer Jonathan González that asks its cast to respond to unseen aspects of Arts and Letters. Following the performance of Spectral Dances, González will join architect and educator Mario Gooden for a conversation about the spectral qualities of the past that exist inside the built environment and how these traces become part of choreographic practice.

Space is limited and RSVP is required.

Jonathan González makes durational performance works that incorporate dance, sound, and video. His latest performance, Spectral Dances, premieres at Arts and Letters throughout the month of October. His first book, Ways to Move: Black Insurgent Grammars, will be published in 2025 by Ugly Duckling Presse.

Mario Gooden is a cultural practice architect and director of Mario Gooden Studio: Architecture + Design. His practice engages the cultural landscape and the intersectionality of architecture, race, gender, sexuality, and technology. His work crosses the thresholds between the design of architecture and the built environment, writing, research, and performance.
