Statement on Racial Inequality
The searing anguish of the Black community reminds us yet again that systemic racism is destroying the nation and its people.
Institutions such as ours have not always equitably included Black architects, artists, composers, and writers. We cannot call ourselves the American Academy of Arts and Letters if our membership and award winners do not more accurately reflect the people of this country. We must rethink how we function and are committed more than ever to honoring artists of color.
The time to act is now.
