We are outraged and anguished by Russia’s military assault on Ukraine and the ensuing humanitarian crisis. No decent person can remain neutral in the face of the death and suffering, the wanton destruction, the callous disregard for the rights of a sovereign people, and the searing images of yet another flood of refugees joining the tens of millions of people displaced by conflicts around the globe. Our hearts go out to all who have been affected.
As artists and writers, we are deeply concerned, as well, by the threat to Ukraine’s distinctive contributions to the cultural heritage of humanity. We join with those in the global community of arts and letters who have spoken out against this invasion, and we salute, in particular, the courage of the Russian artists and writers who continue to do so.
We are making a donation of $20,000 to be split between the Ukrainian Institute of America, which has been coordinating relief efforts, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which aids and protects refugees. Additional donation suggestions may be found here.
